Mulled wine
🍷 Ideal mulled wine: the mathematics of comfort
Mulled wine is the king of winter evenings. But preparing it for a large company is a real challenge. How many cloves should I add to 3 liters of wine? Are two cinnamon sticks enough? If you put in little, it will be compote; if you put in too much, it’s impossible to drink because of the bitterness.
How does the calculation work?
The algorithm takes into account several important factors:
- Wine type: Dry wine requires more honey (or sugar) to balance the acidity, and the amount of hot spices (ginger, cloves) is slightly reduced so as not to overwhelm the taste.
- Intensity: The “Strong” mode increases the amount of spices by 1.5 times - ideal for walks in the cold. The “Soft” mode is suitable for quiet gatherings at home.
- Volume: All ingredients are scaled linearly, but with rounding to whole pieces (for example, you cannot put 1.5 cinnamon sticks - the calculator will tell you the optimal integer).
5 golden rules for delicious mulled wine
Even with ideal proportions the drink can be ruined by technology. Here's a checklist to make sure everything works out:
1. Don't boil! 🚫
This is the most important thing. When boiling (100°C), the alcohol evaporates and the wine tastes flat. The ideal temperature is 70-80°C(white foam has appeared, but bubbles have not yet appeared).
2. Whole spices 🌟
Use cinnamon sticks and clove buds. Ground spices make the drink cloudy and leave an unpleasant grit on your teeth.
3. Let it brew ⏳
Once heated, cover the pan with a lid and let sit for 15-20 minutes. The spices should “open up” and release essential oils.
4. Wine doesn't have to be expensive 💰
Mulled wine does not require elite varieties. Heat and spices will hide the subtle notes of an expensive wine. Take regular table dry or semi-sweet.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
❓ Can this calculator be used for white wine?
Yes, the proportions of spices are also suitable for white mulled wine. However, for white wine, we recommend replacing the orange with lemon or grapefruit, and the amount of cinnamon can be reduced slightly.
❓ What to do if there are no cinnamon sticks, only ground cinnamon?
As a last resort, you can use ground (0.5 teaspoon spoons instead of 1 stick), but be prepared to strain the drink through cheesecloth or a coffee filter before serving.
❓ How to make non-alcoholic mulled wine?
Simply replace the wine with cherry or grape juice. The proportions of spices in our calculator will remain the same, but you don’t need to add honey, since the juice itself is sweet.
