Roman and Arabic numerals converter
🏛️ Online Roman numeral converter
Instantly translate dates, chapter numbers and centuries. The tool works in both directions: it turns the usual Arabic numbers into Roman numbers (2024 → MMXXIV) and vice versa.
I = 1 | V = 5 | X = 10 | L = 50 | C = 100 | D = 500 | M = 1000
How it works (Rules)
To understand the result of the conversion, you need to remember two main principles of Roman arithmetic:
- Addition: If the smaller digit is to the right of the larger one, add it (VI = 5 + 1 = 6).
- Subtraction: If the smaller digit is to the left of the larger one, subtract it (IV = 5 - 1 = 4).

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
🔹 Why can’t I enter a number greater than 3999?
The classic standard of Roman numerals does not provide for writing numbers from 4000 and above in ordinary symbols (for this, dashes were used over the letters, which are difficult to enter from the keyboard). Therefore, we limited the range to maintain accuracy.
🔹 How to write zero (0)?
No way. In the Roman number system, the concept of “zero” did not exist. If you try to enter 0, the calculator will display an error or a blank value.
🔹 Why is 4 IV and not IIII?
Although variant IIII is sometimes found on older clocks, the modern standard requires the use of the subtraction principle for compactness: 4 = IV (5 minus 1), 9 = IX (10 minus 1).
