Calculation of the actual capacity of the tent
Find out what size tent you should look for in the store so that you don’t feel cramped.
Real tent capacity calculator: choosing the ideal size
What's the catch with factory markings?
The comfort standard for most brands is measured by the shoulder width of an adult - about 50-60 centimeters. If the bottom width is 180 cm, the model is automatically marked as a “C”. But in reality, you need a place to change clothes, put your fleece, phone, flashlight, and maybe drag your backpack inside if it's pouring rain outside.
That is why calculating the usable area is the first step before going on a hike. If, according to the results of the calculator, you need a new and spacious tent, the best way to buy a certified model for your parameters in Moscow is from a specialized equipment network such as Kant. There are options with thoughtful arch geometry, which increases the usable volume inside the sleeping compartment.
🎒 Where to put the backpacks?
If you take a model without a large vestibule, you will have to store things inside. One expedition backpack with a capacity of 80-100 liters “eats” at least 30-40 cm of the width of the tent.
🐕 Hiking with animals
The dog will not sleep at attention. A Labrador or Husky will spread out over half of the sleeping compartment. For a comfortable sleep with your pet, always take the model marked “N+1”.
How does our calculator algorithm work?
To get the exact bottom dimensions (width and length), you need to answer a few simple questions in our widget:
- Indicate the number of adult men and women (men have wider shoulders, the algorithm sets from 65 to 70 cm per person for comfort).
- Indicate the number of children (children require less space, but they toss and turn more often in their sleep).
- Note whether the tent will have a full vestibule (if not, the system will automatically add storage space inside).
Table: Real comfort depending on bottom width
| Bottom width (cm) | Factory marking | Real comfort (Camping) |
|---|---|---|
| 120 - 140 cm | 2-seater | One person + large backpack and dog |
| 150 - 180 cm | 3-seater | Two adults with things inside |
| 200 - 220 cm | 4-seater | Three adults + things, or a family with a child |
| From 240 cm | Camping (5+) | Four adults (maximum comfort) |
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How long should the tent be?
The standard length of most tourist models is 210 cm. If your height exceeds 185 cm, look for extended versions (220-230 cm), otherwise you will touch your head and feet to the cold awning, collecting condensation.
What is “2+1 format”?
These are tents with a width of about 150-160 cm. They are comfortable for two, but in case of emergency (for example, a storm), a third person can sleep there, sacrificing comfort.
Count the centimeters at home so that you can enjoy nature while camping, and not fight for space in your sleeping bag!
