Calculate the number of picket fences on the fence

🔨 How to calculate a picket fence for a fence in 1 minute

Our online tool helps you accurately determine the number of boards and screws so that you don’t overpay for excess material and don’t run to the store to buy what’s missing.

🚀 Quick start: Simply enter the length of the fence, the width of one plank and the desired gap. The system itself will take into account the necessary indents and fasteners.

How does the formula work?

For those who want to check the calculation manually, we use the following algorithm:

Number of slats = (Fence length × 1000) ÷ (Slat width + Gap)

*The result is always rounded up to the whole board.

Tips for choosing parameters

Fence type Recommended clearance
Mute (Private) 10–20 mm (almost solid)
Classic 30–50 mm (optimal for price/type)
Decorative 50–80 mm (economical option)

💡 What to look for before purchasing

  • Supply of material: Always take 5-10% more picket fence than the calculator showed. Some of the boards may be defective when cutting or have defects.
  • Curvature of the area: If the fence follows a complex path, the consumption of veins will increase. Please take this into account when planning the delivery of materials.
  • Fasteners: Buy galvanized screws - they do not rust and do not leave streaks on the wood after rain.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

🔹 Which gap is better to choose?

The gold standard is 30–50 mm. This ensures good ventilation of the area (the boards rot less) and looks neat. Less than 20 mm is expensive, more than 60 mm looks too “rare.”

🔹 How many screws should you twist into one strip?

Standard: 2 screws on top and 2 on bottom (4 pcs in total). If the fence is high and there is a third vein in the middle - then 6 pieces. Using one self-tapping screw in the center is unacceptable - the board will unscrew when it dries.

🔹 Is the calculation suitable for a metal picket fence?

Yes, absolutely. The formula is universal. The main thing is to enter the working width of the metal strip (usually indicated on the package) in the “Width” field.

🔹 How to calculate a fence 10 meters long?

With a board width of 100mm and a gap of 40mm, you will need approximately 72 planks. Our calculator will make an accurate calculation taking into account your parameters.
