Which method to choose if time is running out?

✅ Fridge (Slowly but surely)

Pros: The safest method. The meat remains fresh for another 1-2 days after thawing.
Cons: Long. It takes 24 hours for every 2.5 kg of large bird.

💧 Cold Water (Faster)

Pros: 10 times faster than a refrigerator.
Important: The product must be in a sealed bag. The water needs to be changed every 30 minutes to keep it ice cold.

♨️ Microwave (Emergency)

Pros: Minutes instead of hours.
Cons: The meat may begin to cook around the edges. You need to cook immediately after defrosting.

  • Weight matters: If you don't have a kitchen scale, check the label on the package. To convert ounces or pounds (if the recipe is foreign), use weight converter.
  • Large poultry: It is better to transfer a 5-6 kg turkey to the refrigerator 2-3 days before the holiday.
  • Plan your timing: After defrosting, meat often needs more time to marinate. Take this into account when calculating the total time before serving.

❓ Is it possible to defrost meat in hot water?

No, never. Hot water heats the outer layer of meat to a temperature where bacteria multiply explosively, while the inside is still icy. Use only cold tap water.

❓ Is it possible to re-freeze food?

If you defrosted it in a refrigerator - yes, the product can be safely frozen back (although the quality of the texture may suffer). If you used water or a microwave, the product must first be cooked, and only the finished dish can be frozen.

❓ How can you tell if a chicken is completely defrosted?

Try to move the legs or wings - they should move freely. There should be no ice crystals inside the cavity. When pressed, the meat should be soft, not hard.
