Moving box calculator: calculate the packaging accurately

Moving is stressful, which can easily be multiplied by two if you suddenly run out of packaging while packing. Practice shows that people tend to underestimate the volume of their belongings by at least 30%. To save yourself from late-night trips to hardware stores, use our calculator. It will convert the meters of your apartment into exact pieces of packaging materials.

How does the calculation algorithm work?

We included average statistical data from professional moving companies in the tool. You just need to select the type of move (office or apartment) and indicate the number of rooms or footage. The calculator will instantly distribute the total volume into containers of different formats.

When the exact figure is received, all that remains is to buy a box in Moscow (or order delivery from a large manufacturer to your city), bypassing the crazy markups of retail hardware stores. Wholesale bases of corrugated packaging offer prices several times lower, and the quality of cardboard is much higher.

📚 Small (for heavy)

Size about 30x30x30 cm. Ideal for books, dishes, tools and documents. The main rule of a loader: always put heavy things in a small container so that the bottom does not fall through.

👕 Medium (universal)

Size about 60x40x40 cm. The most popular format. Clothes, shoes, small household appliances and toys are stored here. It is them that the calculator considers as a basis.

🧸 Large (for light)

Size from 60x60x60 cm. Suitable exclusively for bulky but light items: blankets, pillows, winter down jackets and bed linen.

Table: Approximate consumption of boxes by room

If you want to estimate the scale of the disaster right now, use these basic numbers for a standard apartment:

Room type Small boxes Medium boxes Big boxes
Studio (up to 30 m²) 10 pcs. 15 pcs. 5 pcs
1-room apartment 15 pcs. 20 pcs. 8 pcs.
2-room apartment 25 pcs. 35 pcs. 12 pcs.
Kitchen (separate) 15 pcs. (for dishes) 5 pcs -
Labelling life hack: Buy several multi-colored markers and label the boxes on several sides (not only on the top, but also on the sides). This way, the movers will immediately see which room to carry the load to (for example: blue - kitchen, red - bedroom), and you won’t have to sort mountains of cardboard in your new apartment.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Which cardboard is better to choose: three-layer or five-layer?

For ordinary things (clothing, linen), three-layer corrugated cardboard (grade T-23 or T-24) is quite sufficient. Five-layer (grade P-32) is needed only for very heavy or fragile items, for example, collectible dishes or expensive electronics.

How to properly seal the bottom?

Never fold the bottom flaps into a lock - they will instantly open when loaded. Close the doors end-to-end and tape along the seam, and then make two strips of tape across, covering the side walls by 10-15 cm.
