Text reading time
⏱️ How to calculate the reading time of an article or post
Have you noticed that on popular blogs (for example, Medium or VC) under the title they often write: “Reading time: 5 min”? This is not done for beauty. Research shows that users are more likely to open long articles if they know in advance how long it will take.
Why know the timing of the text?
- For Bloggers and Authors: Tagging “Time to Read” has been proven to increase engagement by 15-20%. The reader understands that he is not required to spend half an hour.
- For speakers: If you are preparing a speech or report, this tool will tell you whether you will meet the deadline. Normal speaking speed is slightly slower than reading - about 130 words per minute.
- For SEO (search engine optimization): The optimal length of an information article for Google/Yandex is now about 7-10 minutes of thoughtful reading.
💡 Helpful advice: If you need to fit the text within a strict framework (for example, for a post on a social network), first check its volume using character and word calculator.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
🔹 What reading speed does this calculator use?
By default, we use the standard rate of 200 words per minute. This is the speed of comfortable silent reading for most people.
🔹 How to calculate the time for an oral presentation?
The speed is lower for speech. If you plan to read the text out loud, multiply the result by 1.5. For example, if the calculator shows 2 minutes of reading, then the presentation will take about 3 minutes.
🔹 Does text complexity affect time?
Absolutely. Our algorithm calculates mechanically. A technical document or legal contract will be read 1.5–2 times slower than an entertaining blog post of the same length.
