🚫 Why can’t you just count “by area”?

The main mistake of beginners is to divide the area of the wall by the area of one tile. You can’t do that!

Error example:

Wall length 1.55 m. Tile length 0.5 m.

Mathematically: 1.55 / 0.5 = 3.1 tiles.

If you count by area, you will buy the conditional “3.1 pieces”. But in reality you will have to cut a piece from the 4th tile. The remaining trim (0.45 m) will go to waste. This means that this row requires 4 whole tiles.

📐 How much to take in reserve? (Table of layouts)

The tile breaks during delivery and bursts when cutting. Stock required. Its size depends on the installation method:

Layout type Features Margin
Classic
(Seam to seam)
The most economical. Scraps can often be used. +5% - 10%
Diagonal
(Rhombus)
Hides the curvature of the walls, but gives a lot of trim (triangles). +15% - 20%
With offset
(Brick)
Popular for boar tiles and laminate. +10% - 15%

📦 How to transfer items into packages?

The calculator counts in pieces, but the store sells it in packages. How not to make a mistake?

  1. Look at the price tag for the parameter “pieces per package”.
  2. Divide your estimated quantity by the number of tiles in the pack.
  3. ALWAYS round the result up.

Example: You need 42 tiles. There are 8 pieces in a pack. 42 / 8 = 5.25. You will have to buy6 packs(48 tiles). The remainder will become your repair stock

⚖️ Bonus: Grout consumption (Jointing)

90% of buyers forget about this. Calculation formula:

Consumption (kg/m²) = (L + W) / (L × W) × H × S × 1.6

  • L, W - length and width of the tile (mm)
  • H - tile thickness (mm)
  • S - seam width (mm)

For 30x30 cm tiles with a 2 mm joint, usually 1 kg of grout per 3-4 m² is enough.

❓ Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Do I need to lay tiles behind the bathroom/kitchen?

If you want to save money, you can leave it out. But the master’s advice: post it everywhere. This is reliable waterproofing, protection from mold and freedom in the future (if you decide to change your bathtub to a shower stall, you won’t have to look for tiles from the old collection).

What stock should I take for large-format tiles (60x60, 60x120)?

For a large format, a margin of percent is dangerous. It's better to count in pieces. It often happens that literally one slab is missing, and you have to buy a whole huge pack. Take a reserve of at least 2-3 whole slabsin excess of the calculated one.

Should I subtract the doorway?

Yes, subtract the area of the door from the area of the walls. Butdo not subtractthe space for sockets and switches - the tiles are still wasted there (a hole is cut in it), and the risk of splitting it when drilling is very high.
