Waist/Hip Index (WHR)
Assessing fat distribution and health risks
to calculate WHR index
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) calculator: Online risk calculation
⚖️ What is the WHR index and why calculate it?
WHR (Waist-to-Hip Ratio) is the ratio of waist circumference to hip circumference. Unlike Body Mass Index (BMI), which only shows your total weight, WHR determines exactly where fat accumulates in your body.
This indicator helps doctors and nutritionists determine the type of obesity:
- 🍏 Apple type (abdominal):fat accumulates on the abdomen. It is more dangerous for the heart and metabolism.
- 🍐 Pear type (gynoid): Fat accumulates on the hips. This is less dangerous to health, but is often disturbing from an aesthetic point of view.
📏 How to measure your parameters correctly?
In order for the calculator to show the correct result, it is important not to make a mistake with a measuring tape:
- Waist: Measured at the narrowest point (usually just above the navel). Do not pull in your stomach, breathe calmly.
- Hips: Measured across the widest part of the buttocks. The tape should lie horizontally without warping.
WHR norm table (according to WHO)
The World Health Organization identifies the following risk boundaries:
| Health risks | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 Low (Normal) | less than 0.90 | less than 0.80 |
| 🟡 Moderate | 0.90 - 0.99 | 0.80 - 0.84 |
| 🔴 High | more than 1.00 | more than 0.85 |
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
🔹 Why is WHR considered more accurate than BMI?
BMI can show “normal” even if a person has a lot of dangerous visceral fat on the abdomen. WHR reveals precisely this hidden risk. The ideal option is to use both calculators together.
🔹 What is more dangerous: belly fat or hip fat?
Belly fat (high WHR) is more dangerous. It coats internal organs and increases the risk of diabetes and hypertension. Fat on the thighs (low WHR) is considered subcutaneous and less metabolically active.
🔹 How often should you take measurements?
If you are in the process of losing weight, measure your volume once every 2-4 weeks. More often it doesn’t make sense, since volumes go away slower than weight.
