Fishing Hook Size
🎣 How to choose the hook size for the fish and bait
The right hook is balance. Too small will not detect the fish, too large will scare it away or will not allow it to properly attach bait. Our calculator solves this problem by taking into account three factors:
- What we catch: (Carp, Perch, Pike, etc.)
- What we catch: (Worm, Maggot, Boyle, Live bait)
- Trophy size: (Approximate length of fish in cm)
Typical mistakes of beginners
Why does the fish break away or not bite?
- Thick wire for maggots: The bait leaks out and loses its appearance. For delicate baits, thin hooks (Fine wire) are needed.
- Small mouth for a predator: Pike simply will not be hooked on a small hook, even if it grabs a live bait.
- Dull sting: Test sharpness with your fingernail. If the hook slides, it goes into the trash.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
🔹 What numbering does it use? calculator?
We use the international scale (Redditch scale), which is accepted by most brands (Owner, Gamakatsu). In it, No. 20 is the smallest, and No. 1 is the largest. For trophy fish, “marine” numbering is used through a fraction (1/0, 2/0), where the size increases with the number.
🔹 Why is a range of sizes displayed (for example, No. 8-10)?
Because the conditions are always different. If the fish is active, put No. 8 (it is larger and more reliable). If the bite is sluggish and the fish is cautious, reduce to No. 10 to make the tackle less noticeable.
🔹 How to choose a hook for a fishing line?
There is a rule of balance: a thick line will bend a thin hook when hooked, and a thick hook on a thin line will look unnatural. Usually, recommended hook numbers are written on fishing line packages.
