Fishing rod weight

🎣 How to choose the ideal sinker weight

Correct loading is a balance. A load that is too light will be carried away by the current; a load that is too heavy will scare away the fish and reduce the sensitivity of the gear. Our calculator helps you find the golden mean, taking into account the depth and strength of the current.

🚀 How it works: The algorithm analyzes 4 factors: depth, line thickness (windage), current strength and wind. You don't have to guess - just enter your fishing conditions.

The influence of current on the choice of weight

The most important factor is the strength of the water flow. We use the following correction factors:

Conditions Pond type Weight correction
Weak flow Pond, lake, creek +0% (Base)
Medium flow River, canal +20–30%
Strong current Mountain river, rifts +50% or more

Tips for setting up gear

  • Diameter of line: Thick line floats strongly in the current, requiring a heavier load. Try to use the smallest possible diameter or braided cord.
  • Bottom type: For a muddy bottom, add 10-15% weight (to avoid getting sucked in), for a rocky bottom, take the minimum to avoid snags.
  • Wind: In strong winds (more than 5 m/s), increase the weight by 10% to stabilize the cast.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

🔹 How often should you change the weight of the sinker?

Change the load when the point changes (depth changes), wind or current increases. Experienced fishermen check the relevance of the load every 2-3 hours time of fishing.

🔹 Which is better: one heavy load or two light ones?

For a feeder, one weight (feeder) is better. For float tackle, a chain of several pellets (olive + sub-shot) makes the tackle more sensitive and natural.

🔹 How does the shape of the sinker affect fishing?

For flow, choose flat shapes (“frame”, “spoon”) - they hold the bottom better. For long-distance casting and standing water, streamlined shapes (“bullet”, “drop”) are ideal.
