Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
🔹 Why is a mile not exactly 1.6 km?
Historically, there have been many types of miles (sea, Roman). But the modern international standard (International Mile), adopted in 1959, is strictly fixed as 1609.344 meters.
🔹 What is the difference between a land mile and a sea mile?
These are different units! An ordinary (land) mile is ≈ 1.61 km. A nautical mile (used in aviation and shipping) is longer and equals exactly 1852 meters (≈ 1.85 km).
🔹 Why are there still miles in the USA?
The United States, Liberia and Myanmar are the only countries that have not officially adopted the metric system. This is due to the huge costs of replacing road signs and technical documentation.
