Screen diagonal

📏 Diagonal and screen size calculator

This tool solves two main problems: it converts the diagonal from inches into clear centimeters (to find out the width and height of the TV) and vice versa - it calculates the diagonal if you measured the screen with a ruler.

🚀 How to use:
  • Mode 1 (Buying a TV): You know the diagonal (for example, 55"), but want to understand whether the TV will fit into the cabinet niche. The calculator will show the exact width and height.
  • Mode 2 (Measurement):You measured the screen with a tape measure. Enter the width and height to see its diagonal in inches.

Why is it important to know the exact dimensions?

Manufacturers indicate the diagonal size in inches (imperial system), and we measure furniture and fixtures in centimeters (metric system). Our calculator helps you connect this data.

🏠 For home

Before purchasing equipment, make sure it will fit in the allotted space. Don’t forget to leave gaps for ventilation and wiring (by the way, you can calculate cable length separately).

📐 For accuracy

If you need to convert the received data to other units, use our converters: cm to inches or millimeters to centimeters.

Mathematics of calculation (How it works)

The calculations are based on Pythagorean theorem (a² + b² = c²). The calculator calculates the hypotenuse (diagonal) based on the legs (width and height), and then converts the result using the standard: 1 inch = 2.54 cm.

Aspect Ratio is also taken into account. The standard for modern TVs is 16:9, for old monitors - 4:3, for cinemas - 21:9.

❓ Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

🔹 How to correctly measure the screen with a tape measure?

Measure only the active matrix (the luminous part), without grabbing the plastic frames of the case. The diagonal is measured from the bottom left corner to the top right.

🔹 What is the difference between cm, mm and inches?

Inches (") - the standard for indicating the diagonal. Centimeters and millimeters - the standard for physical dimensions (width and height). Read more about units of length read in our directory.

🔹 What is 16:9 aspect ratio?

This is a proportion, meaning that for every 16 units of width there are 9 units of height. This is the most popular format for HD and 4K content.

🔹 Is the calculator suitable for projectors?

Yes. You can enter the width and height of the projection surface to see what diagonal you have in inches.
