🍕 What is a common fraction? (We explain on pizza)

In the world of numbers, we are accustomed to counting as whole objects: 1 apple, 10 cars, 100 rubles. But life is more complicated. What if we have one pizza and eight friends? We need to describepart of the whole.

Definition:
A common fraction is a mathematical notation for a number that consists of one or more equal parts of a unit. If you need to quickly make calculations, use our online fraction calculator.

Anatomy of a fraction: What does it consist of?

Imagine a pizza that has been cut into 8 equal pieces. You took 3 pieces for yourself. Mathematically this is written as3/8.

3
8
  • Numerator (top): How many parts we took (counted).
  • Denominator (bottom): How many parts did we divide (mark) the whole.

The line between numbers is not just a line, it is a division sign. Notation 3/8 literally means “3 divided by 8.”

Three types of fractions

Depending on who is “heavier” - the top or the bottom, fractions are divided into three types. This is important to know for correct counting.

1. Proper Fractions

Numerator is less than denominator.
Example: 1/2, 3/8, 99/100.

This is always less than one integer. For example, you didn’t eat all the pizza, but only part of it. Often such fractions can be simplified - more about this in the article about reducing fractions.

2. Improper fractions

The numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.
Example: 5/5, 9/5, 12/10.

This means you have more than one pizza. For example, 9/5 is a whole pizza (5 slices) and 4 more slices from the second one. Read more about improper fractions.

3. Mixed numbers

Integer + fraction.
Example: 1 4/5 (one whole and four fifths).

It’s more convenient to say in life: “one and a half liters” rather than “three and a half.” Consist of integer and a fractional “tail”.

Where do we use this in life?

Fractions are not an abstract school theory. We encounter them every day:

  • 🍳 In the kitchen: Recipes always say “1/2 teaspoon” or “3/4 cup.” If you make a mistake with the fractions, the dish will not turn out. By the way, for accurate measurements the table weight of products in spoons is useful.
  • ⌚ Time: “Quarter of an hour” is 1/4 (15 minutes). “Half an hour” is 1/2.
  • 🏷 Discounts: “Third price discount” means that you need to subtract 1/3 of the price.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

🔹 What does a dash mean in a fraction?

The slash is a division sign. Writing 1/2 is the same as 1 divided by 2 (the result is 0.5).

🔹 Why is the numerator larger than the denominator?

Such a fraction is called an improper fraction. This means that the quantity in question is greater than one whole (for example, 3 halves of an apple is 3/2 or one and a half apples).

🔹 How to turn an improper fraction into a mixed number?

You need to divide the numerator by the denominator with the remainder. The result of the division will become the whole part, and the remainder will become the new numerator. Example: 5/2 -> 5 divided by 2 = 2 (remainder 1) -> result 2 1/2.
