➗ How to Divide Fractions: The Reverse and Multiply Rule
Our calculator does all the work instantly, but understanding the principle will help you check the results. The secret is simple: division is replaced by multiplication by the reciprocal fraction.
To divide a fraction A by a fraction B, you need to multiply A by reversed B.
🔍 What can this tool do?
The calculator not only gives the answer, but describes the solution step by step. It works with any data:
- Ordinary and improper fractions: classical division.
- Mixed numbers: (for example, 2 1/2) - the system will automatically convert them to improper fractions for calculation.
- Integers: if you need to divide a fraction by a number (or vice versa).
- Negative values: correct accounting of minus signs when dividing.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
❓ Why do you need to “flip” the second fraction?
This is a mathematical rule. Division is the inverse operation of multiplication. To do it, we take the reciprocal number (the inverted fraction) and change the sign of division to multiplication.
❓ Is it possible to divide by zero?
No. Division by zero is not defined in mathematics. If you enter 0 for the denominator of the divisor, the calculator will report an error.
❓ How to divide a fraction by a whole number?
Represent the whole number as a fraction with a denominator of 1 (for example, 5 = 5/1). Then follow the rule: 3/4 ÷ 5 = 3/4 ÷ 5/1 = 3/4 × 1/5 = 3/20.
❓How to divide mixed numbers (with an integer part)?
First, convert them to an improper fraction (multiply the whole part by the denominator and add the numerator). For example, 1 1/2 becomes 3/2. After that, divide as usual.
