Fraction calculator (with solution)
🔢 Fraction calculator with detailed solution
Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions is a foundation of math that often poses challenges in 5th and 6th grade. Our tool not only gives a ready-made answer, but also describes each step: search for a common denominator (NOK), additional factors, reduction and selection of the whole part.
🚀 How to use the calculator:
- Enter a fraction: Fill in the numerator (top field) and denominator (bottom field).
- Mixed number: If you have an integer part (for example, 2.56), enter "2" in the left box. For ordinary fractions, leave it blank.
- Select an action: Plus (➕), Minus (➖), Multiply (✖️) or Divide (➗).
- Get the solution: Click “Calculate” and see the entire solution progress.
📚 Cheat sheet: How to solve fractions by hand?
If you don't have a calculator at hand, use these rules. We use them in our algorithm.
➕ Addition and Subtraction
The main rule: The denominators must be equal!
- Find the LCM (Least Common Multiple) of the denominators.
- Adjust the numerators by additional factors.
- Add (or subtract) the numerators, but leave the denominator the same.
✖️ Multiplication and Division
The common denominator is not needed.
- Multiplication: Numerator × Numerator, Denominator × Denominator.
- Division: The second fraction must be “reversed” (reversed) and the division sign replaced by multiplication.
Types of fractions we count
Our online tool works with all types of rational numbers:
- Proper fractions:The numerator is less than the denominator (example:
3/4). - Improper fractions: The numerator is greater than the denominator (example:
5/2). The calculator will automatically highlight the whole part in the answer. - Mixed numbers: Whole number + fraction (example:
1 1/2). When making calculations, we convert them to improper fractions.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
🔹 How to enter a mixed fraction (with an integer number)?
The calculator interface has three fields for each fraction.
The first field (large) is for the whole part.
Second and third - for the numerator and denominator.
If you have a fraction without a whole part (for example, 2/5), simply leave the first field blank.
🔹 Does the calculator shorten the answer?
4/8, the system will find GCD (greatest common divisor - 4) and give a short answer: 1/2.🔹 How to convert a fraction to a decimal?
Any fraction can be converted to a decimal by simply dividing the numerator by the denominator.
Example: 1/2 = 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5.
