Fraction addition calculator
➕ Quick addition of fractions with solution
Adding fractions is one of the most common problems in arithmetic. Our calculator does this instantly, showing you every step, from finding the common denominator to cutting the result.
- Add ordinary fractions (for example, 1/2 + 3/4).
- Work with mixed numbers (2 1/5) and convert them to improper fractions.
- Automatically take into account integers and negative values.
🔍 How it works (Step-by-step algorithm)
So that you not only receive an answer, but also understand the logic, the system performs the following actions:
- Conversion:If mixed numbers are entered, they are converted to improper fractions.
- Common denominator: Find the least common multiple (LCM).
- Addition:The numerators are added, but the denominator remains common.
- Simplification: The result is reduced if the numerator and denominator are divided by the same numbers.
Where is this useful in life?
Fractions surround us everywhere, even if we don't notice it. Here are real examples:
🍰 Cooking
The recipe calls for 1 1/2 cups of flour, but you want to add another 2/3 cup? The calculator will tell you exactly how much it will be together (2 1/6) so as not to spoil the dough.
🔨 Repair and construction
Do you need to join two pieces of plinth 3/4 meter and 1/2 meter long? Accurate calculation is important down to the millimeter.
💸 Finance
Planning a budget? For example, 1/5 of salary goes to food, and 3/10 goes to loans. By adding the fractions, you will understand what part of the income is already taken (1/2 or 50%).
⏱️ Time management
If the task took 1/4 hour, and the break took 1/6 hour, how much time passed in total? An easy way to control your timing.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
🔹 How to enter a negative fraction?
Simply place a minus sign in front of the whole part or before the numerator. For example: -1 2/3 or -5/6. The calculator will correctly process the signs according to the rules of mathematics.
🔹 Why can’t you just add the numerators and denominators?
This is the most common mistake! You cannot add 1/2 + 1/3 as 2/5. Fractions are parts of a whole. To add them up, you must first bring them to the “same parts” (common denominator).
🔹 Are decimals supported?
This tool is designed specifically for fractions. If you have a number like 0.5, it is better to write it as 1/2, or use our universal calculator.
