Minimum 3-4 hours, but ideally leave it in the refrigerator overnight (8-10 hours). This way the mayonnaise will saturate the dry layers of potatoes and eggs, and the taste will become uniform.

❓ Which herring is better to take: whole or fillet?

The most delicious option is whole barrel herring, which you clean yourself (it is fattier and more tender). Fillet in oil is often over-salted or tastes like preservatives. Our calculator shows the weight for both fillets and whole fish.

❓ Do I need to salt the layers?

Usually there is enough salt in herring and mayonnaise. But if you use homemade mayonnaise or like it spicier, you can lightly add a layer of potatoes and eggs.
