✂️ How the fraction reduction calculator works

To reduce a fraction is to divide its numerator and denominator by the same maximum number (Greatest Common Divisor) to obtain an equivalent fraction with the smallest possible numbers. Our tool automates this process, eliminating routine columnar calculations.

What the calculator can do:
  • Works with mixed numbers (integer part + fraction).
  • Automatically finds the GCD of the numerator and denominator.
  • Converts improper fractions to mixed fractions after reduction.
  • Supports negative values.

Instructions: how to reduce a fraction in 3 steps

  1. Fill in the fields: Enter the numerator and denominator. If you have a mixed number, also indicate the whole part in the left field.
  2. Click “Reduce”:The system will instantly perform the calculation.
  3. Learn the steps: A detailed analysis will appear in the right column (or below on mobile phones) - from the search for GCD to the final result.

Theory: basic rules of reduction

To reduce a fraction manually, you must use the basic property of the fraction. Here is the algorithm our calculator uses:

1. Search for divisor
Find the gcd for the numbers above and below. For example, for 24/36 the gcd is 12.
2. Division
Divide both parts by the found number: 24÷12 = 2, and 36÷12 = 3.
3. Check
If the numerator is greater than the denominator, select the whole part (make it a mixed fraction).

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

🔹 What fraction is called irreducible?

A fraction is called irreducible if the gcd of its numerator and denominator is equal to 1 (that is, they have no common divisors other than one). Our calculator will tell you if the fraction you entered is already one.

🔹 How to reduce a mixed number?

When reducing a mixed number, the integer part remains unchanged, and only the fractional part is reduced. However, if the fractional part becomes "wrong", the calculator will correct the whole number automatically.

🔹 Is the calculator suitable for checking remote control?

Yes, this is the perfect tool for self-testing. A detailed solution log will help you understand at what stage the error was made if the answers do not match.
