➖ Fraction subtraction calculator with solution
Subtracting fractions is more difficult than adding: you need to pay attention to the common denominator, signs and transition through the whole. Our tool does this automatically and showseach step of the solution. It's the perfect assistant for checking homework and preparing for tests.
- Solves examples with ordinary fractions (for example, 3/4).
- Works with mixed numbers (2 1/3) and converts them to improper fractions.
- Takes into account negative numbers and sign rules.
- Automatically performs reducing fractions in the answer.
📝 How to subtract fractions manually (Cheat Sheet)
If you don't have a calculator at hand, use this algorithm. Let's look at this example: 3 1/2 − 1 2/3.
- Get rid of whole parts. Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions.
3 1/2 → 7/2
1 2/3 → 5/3 - Find the common denominator. This is where knowledge of LOC (Least Common Multiple) may come in handy. For 2 and 3 it is 6.
7/2 turns into 21/6
5/3 turns into 10/6 - Subtract the numerators. The denominator remains the same.
(21 − 10) / 6 = 11/6 - Simplify the answer. Highlight the whole part back.
11/6 = 1 5/6
🌍 Where will this be useful in life?
Fractions are not just a school curriculum. Here are real scenarios where our calculator will save you time:
🛠️ Repair and construction
Do you need to cut a 2 5/6 meter piece from a 4 1/3 meter long board? The calculator will tell you exactly what length you will have remaining so as not to spoil the material.
🎨 Material consumption
If there were 2 1/2 liters in the jar and you spent 3/4, how much was left for the second layer? This is important when calculating paint consumption.
💰 Finance
Spent 2/5 of your salary on a loan and 1/10 on food? Subtracting fractions will help you understand how much of your budget is free.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
🔹 Why doesn't the calculator accept decimal fractions (0.5)?
This tool is designed specifically for working with ordinary fractions (with a numerator and a denominator). If you need to subtract decimal numbers (for example, 2.5 - 1.3), it is better to use standard calculator.
🔹 How to enter a negative fraction?
Simply place a minus sign before the whole part (for example, -2 1/3) or before the numerator. The system will automatically take into account the rules of signs: “minus for minus gives a plus.”
🔹 Is it possible to subtract three fractions at once?
Not in the current interface. We recommend solving chains of examples sequentially: first subtract the second fraction from the first, and then subtract the third from the resulting result. This reduces the risk of error.
🔹 What to do if the denominators are the same?
You're in luck! Simply subtract the numerators and leave the denominator unchanged. For example: 5/8 − 2/8 = 3/8.
