Improper fractions

📚 Proper and improper fractions: what's the difference?

It's simple: the type of fraction depends on which number is larger - the top (numerator) or bottom (denominator).

✅ Proper fraction

Numerator

Examples: 3/4, 7/10, 1/2.

It is always less than one.

❌ Improper fraction

Numerator ≥ Denominator

Examples: 5/3, 11/4, 7/7.

It is greater than or equal to one.

This calculator helps you instantly convert improper fractions to mixed numbers (with an integer part) and vice versa. This is the basis for more complex topics, for example, if you need to calculate percentage of a number.

🧮 Example solutions

The calculator does this automatically, but it is useful to know the algorithm:

1. From a mixed number → to an improper fraction

Task: Translate2 1/3(two point one third).

  • Multiply the whole part by the bottom: 2 × 3 = 6
  • Add the top: 6 + 1 = 7
  • Result: 7/3

2. From improper fraction → to mixed number

Task: Select an entire part from11/4.

  • Divide 11 by 4. We get 2 (this is the whole part) and the remainder is 3.
  • Write the remainder upward, leaving the denominator the same.
  • Total: 2 3/4

❓ Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

🔹 How to enter a negative fraction?

Our calculator works with absolute numbers (positive values). If you have an example with a minus (for example, -2 1/3), simply count it as positive, and add a minus in the answer.

🔹 What to do if the denominator is zero?

In mathematics, division by zero is impossible. If you enter 0 in the bottom field, the calculator will throw an error.

🔹 Is it possible to turn a regular number into a fraction?

Yes, any whole number can be represented as a fraction with a denominator of 1. For example, the number 5 is a fraction 5/1.

🔹 What is the difference between a proper fraction and an improper fraction?

A proper fraction is always less than 1 (the numerator is less than the denominator). An improper fraction is always greater than or equal to 1 (the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator).
