Comparison of fractions

🔢 How to understand which fraction is larger?

Our calculator does what math teachers demand: it doesn’t just put a “>” or “<” sign, but describes the entire solution through reduction to a common denominator.

🚀 How to use: Enter the numerators and denominators of the two fractions. The system will instantly show the comparison result and explain why one fraction is larger than another.

Cheat sheet: 3 methods for comparing fractions

If you don't have a calculator at hand, use one of these methods (our tool uses the first):

  • Method 1: Common denominator (Classic). To compare 3/4 and 2/3, we reduce them to the number 12. We get 9/12 and 8/12. It is immediately clear that the first one is larger.
  • Method 2: Butterfly (Criss-Cross)Multiply the numerator of the first fraction by the denominator of the second (3x3=9) and vice versa (2x4=8). Compare the resulting numbers (9 > 8).
  • Method 3: DecimalSimply divide the numerator by the denominator. 3/4 = 0.75, and 2/3 ≈ 0.66. This method is convenient if you have a regular calculator.

Where is this useful in life?

Study: Checking homework and analyzing mistakes. If you need not just to compare, but to add or multiply numbers, go to fraction calculator with solution.

Construction and repair: Craftsmen often encounter inch drills or fasteners (which is larger: 5/16 or 3/8 inch?).

Timed tasks: Comparing fractions of an hour (for example, 2/3 hours or 3/4 hours). To convert these values into minutes, it is more convenient to use time converter.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

❓ How to compare a fraction with a whole number?

Represent the whole number as a fraction with a denominator of 1. For example, to compare the number 2 and the fraction 5/3, write the 2 as 2/1. Now bring it to a common denominator: 6/3 > 5/3.

❓ What to do with negative fractions?

Remember the rule: the larger the number modulo (without the minus), the smaller it is with the minus sign. For example, 1/2 is greater than 1/4, but -1/2 is less than -1/4 (since it is to the left on the number line).

❓ How to compare three fractions at once?

You need to find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) for all three denominators at once and convert all the fractions to this new denominator. After this, it is enough to simply compare their numerators.
